About Wicked Women Writers:

Wicked Women Writers, WWW, is a private Facebook group of female writers. Although ostensibly about producing horror we now discuss all kinds of writing styles and genres. We check in on each other, brainstorm, encourage, share marketing strategy and sometime kick each other under the virtual table. For the last 3 years WWW has held a fan-voted-on writing competition. The winner carries the title of ‘Most Wicked’ for the year (like our own Heather Roulo who was Most Wicked for 2009). The winner receives books and prizes. Borders Bankruptcy?

Www.bloomberg.com reported on February 2, 2011 that Borders Group Inc., the second- largest U.S. bookstore chain, may be filing for bankruptcy as soon as this week. A bankruptcy could mean that of the 650 retail stores 150 may well have to be closed and new sources of financing created. Borders delayed payments to publishers in January as part of an effort to restructure its financing and avoid a cash shortfall. Podioracket ran an interview with me back in June of 2009. It was Episode 11- Season Finale. I had only begun podcasting Toothless, my genre-bending zombie apocalypse tale set in the middle ages. I had no sense of where the book was going, or what would happen to it. I didn’t even know if I’d finish it.

I’m proud to return to Podioracket to announce that Toothless is now a trade paperbook from Dragon Moon Press. The e-book is coming soon. Publishers Weekly calls it “moving, intriguing, and highly entertaining.” See for yourself. I keep going back to that page to prove it to myself.

Why? Let me explain.

I’d been struggling to fit writing back into my life. In the spring of 2009, I stumbled upon Podiobooks.com quite by accident. I vowed on the spot to jump in. It’d be my last stand. Trouble was, I didn’t have anything finished. Everyone says you’ve got to have something finished.

Rules. Made to be broken.

I dug through a layer of projects that I’d barely started. I found the first chapter of Toothless, which I’d written several years before. It was in some strange format from some nonstandard word processor, but that didn’t stop me. I wrestled it into OpenOffice and went to work. I gathered what I’d need to kick off the podcast.

Once it was out there, I started getting emails. Fans. Actual fans. Podioracket was my first interview, and put me in touch with even more fans.

Twenty four chapters, a bunch of interviews, tons of emails, and about a half million keystrokes later, there’s a trade paperback. And the writer in me is alive again.

There are a couple of lessons here.

The first is for the budding writers out there. You can do it, too. If you’re like I was, you can’t wait until the work is finished. Maybe you shouldn’t. No one else is going to tell you that, but it might just help to hear it from someone who knows what podcasting an unfinished novel is like. Without the fans pushing me each week, there’d be no Toothless. I wouldn’t have finished it.

The second lesson, whether you’re a fan of Toothless or not, is this: the more of us who succeed, the better the world will be. Really. There’s a big machine out there that thinks it has calculated your tastes to two decimal points of revenue. Work to find the unorthodox stuff, the more imaginative stuff, and support the authors who are giving it to you for free. Support the small presses like Dragon Moon who are willing to take risks on these works. Spread the word. The revolution isn’t just on their shoulders. Readers and listeners can help, too.

The revolution won’t be televised, but it’s being podcasted right here on Podioracket. And tweeted. It’s moving through status updates on Facebook. It creeps through DeviantArt and other spaces.
