Whether it makes sense to self-publish and the best method to do so is a question that comes up frequently among Podiobooks.com authors. Though some authors are already published, many must consider self-publishing.  A few but growing number get published as they promote their podiobook.

Matthew Wayne Selznick, author of Brave Men Run, compiled an excellent article about The Top Twenty Podiobooks at Amazon.com. It summarizes the state of things today and discusses methods being used to succeed at self-publishing and promotion. Don’t skip the comments.

See what Wil Wheaton has to say about self-publishing resources. He had a good experience with Lulu.  The links to more information on self-publishing can lead you deeper into researching this topic.

Personal testemonials must also be considered. Arlene Radasky, author of The Fox, evaluated several companies before settling on BookSurge, “As I looked into the realm of what was available, Book Surge became more and more appealing. They are more expensive, but the feeling of competency came  immediately with the first personal contact. I was gently transferred from department to department with all the help and consideration that I could have hoped for. In four months, I was holding my book in my hands and it was available instantly, after my approval, on Amazon. I am still impressed every time I hold it in my hands.”

Our own Rhonda R. Carpenter used iUniverse for the initial publish of The Mark of the Druid.  Her experience was erratic; “The best part of the iUniverse experience was the editorial evaluation. This company has a lot of customer services catch-up to do and while I can’t recommend them at this time I do think they are capable of getting it together.”

You may also listen to P.G. Holyfield, author of Murder on Avedon Hill who self-published prior to selling his book to Dragon Moon Press.  He says, “I recently appeared on the The Dead Robots’ Society’s podcast and talked in length about self-publishing, Lulu, CreateSpace, etc.”

I’m weighing the option of self-publishing Fractured Horizon and will provide updates as I go through the process.

The field of self-publishing is something that is interesting, constantly changing, and can vary by the individual. We’ll continue to track information, impressions, and recommendations on self-publishing as PodioRacket.com gets off the ground.
